Common to all four courses, this content develops students' understanding of probability from first principles. Students work with sample spaces, combined and mutually exclusive events, and calculate probabilities using Venn diagrams, tree diagrams and tables of outcomes. Conditional probability and independence are central, with students applying P(A|B) = P(A∩B)/P(B) and the independence condition P(A∩B) = P(A)P(B). Probabilities with and without replacement are also covered. In AA HL, Bayes' theorem is introduced as a further extension for a maximum of three events.
