Common to all four courses, this content connects the behaviour of a function to the behaviour of its derivative. Students identify intervals where a function is increasing or decreasing, locate stationary points and determine their nature using first and second derivative tests, and identify points of inflection through a change in concavity. The relationships between the graphs of f, f' and f'' are explored using both analytic and graphical approaches. In AA HL, L'Hôpital's rule extends the analysis to function behaviour near asymptotes and indeterminate forms.
