Exclusive to AI HL, matrices are introduced with students learning to define and perform operations including addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication and matrix multiplication, understanding why multiplication is non-commutative. Determinants and inverses are calculated by hand for 2×2 matrices and with technology for larger ones, and used to solve systems of linear equations. The content extends to eigenvalues and eigenvectors for 2×2 matrices, including diagonalisation and its application to computing powers of matrices — connecting to real-life contexts such as population modelling and Markov chains.
