Exclusive to AI HL, the Poisson distribution is introduced as a model for events that occur independently at a uniform average rate. Students learn to identify contexts where the Poisson model is appropriate, work with its mean and variance (both equal to λ), and apply the result that the sum of two independent Poisson distributions is also Poisson. A key skill is selecting between the normal, binomial and Poisson distributions given a real-world context.
