Many of the applications in Calculus revolve around minimum and maximum values of a function. While we can all visualize the minimum and maximum values of a function we want to be a little more specific in our work here. In particular, we want to differentiate between two types of minimum or maximum values. The following definition gives the types of minimums and/or maximums values that we’ll be looking at. Also, we'’l establish the difference between critical points and stationary points.
Duration: 30 min
Lesson objectives
- Students will learn what is a critical point, a stationary point and will be able to distinguish both
- Students will be able to find critical points using derivatives
- Students will find maxima and minima (local and global) analysing the signs of the derivative
